| M:40 - HISTORIENS SVARTA VINGSLAG |
| |
| Information |
| Crust/hardcore from Lidköping. Twelve songs of total fury! Fullength album recorded at HoboRec, Jönköping. The songs are mixed with slower parts, which keeps the record as a whole interesting and focused. As on a prime note; crustpunk has never - and will never be - better than this. Think Totalt Jävla Mörker mixed with Neurosis!

| Historiens svarta vingslag written by Kristoffer Persson [My Last Chapter, English] |
I have to be completely honest here… I’m a bit skeptical about this album. I hate to say it, but no matter what great guys they might be I have to be honest. And the thing that turns me into a skeptic are the vocals. Two main vocalists, and both a bit annoying in the long run. I have absolutely no problem with screechy, gnarly screaming, but all the time? It would be a whole lot easier to digest this if one of the lads would growl just a little, go for some depth in his voice. But other than that this album’s great!
Hardcore-ized crustcore, very hardcore-ized. Or maybe I should say metalcore-ized, ‘cause it has its share of metal as well. Pounding and powerful tunes with that mosh-friendly atmosphere that you can only find in a really killer hardcore album. The parts of pure drum hammering and bass rambling are golden, the tunes that steps out of the mold and dare to really venture off (like Your dark eyes and Väggarna omkring dig) really shows their versatility. But my mind keeps going back to think of Totalt Jävla Mörker, and to tell you the truth said band started to suck major arse as soon as they started releasing fullengths. And so in my book it’s not a great comparison. But other than the songs that really stand out it can also be a bit monotonous…
I guess it’s a fair bet to say I’m having problems deciding whether or not to really like or dislike Historiens svarta vingslag. Some bits are really killer that would probably be terrific for a night of violent (but friendly, of course) moshing, but for some I miss the intensity to really make me wanna do so. And for crying out loud, please include some backup screaming that aren’t as bright, ‘cause that would really give it a tougher and brutal output. On the brightside the sound is pretty damn decent and the booklet looks great. |

| Historiens svarta vingslag written by Arne [Music-scan.de, German] |

| Historiens svarta vingslag written by Isaak [Vampire Magazine, English] |
M:40 is a Swedish band who call themselves crustcore / hardcore. Secondly M:40 was rejected by Metal Archives for ‘not being metal’. Yet they appear here now on Vampire Magazine with their album "Historiens svarta vingslag" and yes there are some crustcore moments to be found here that validate the dreads of guitarist Daniel and drummer Simon. But to be honest the production is way too heavy and neat, there are way too many dull mid paced metal moments. Even though the band has several vocalists, neither one of them exceeds metalcore mediocrity. Yes, you’ve read that one correctly. The vocalists sound metalcore, not crust.
There are some up tempo crustcore moments to be found on the album, but they’re not really catchy nor hyperactive enough no matter how many times I listen to them. What sets the band apart from standard crustcore is the presence of some typical Scandinavian riffing. Played in minor and with a harmonic touch. Quite a nice approach in theory but these ‘melodic’ sections (often mid paced) damage the intensity of the songs and continuity of the album. Sorry, it simply doesn’t work.
No, there are far better (real) crustcore albums out there and within that specific genre I would call this album rather obsolete. Maybe metalcore fans can find anything here that appeals to them. No, I still don’t consider this band to be crustcore nor hardcore but a typical modern Scandinavian metal band with some crustcore influences at most. |
