Reviews

To be honest I haven't paid much attention to M:40 in the more recent past. I have no real reason for this, but I just haven't been all that interested in the band. I have reviewed a couple of their earlier material so I am acquainted with the band, but in all honesty I must say I haven't given the records many spins after said review has been written - despite enjoying the material. So now that I got this new split it's the first meeting with M:40 in quite some time.
I was excited about their split with Grace.Will.Fall when that one came out and they showed that they had stepped out of the shadow of Totalt Jävla Mörker and held their own ground. Since that split they've released the full-length "Historiens Svarta Vingslag" which I just recently heard and the "Industrilandskap" 7" which I haven't heard yet. Both that LP and this split is a natural development of what they had achieved on the split with Grace.Will.Fall - they're angrier, faster, harder… more of everything really.
You got the melodies and the slower parts too, but this is far from the standard sounding neo-crust but instead quite raging Swedish crustcore. There's quite a lot of death metal in their sound but, if not more, at least an equal amount of käng. They've got some good, hard, rhythmic breakdowns in their songs as well, which are much welcomed to raise my interest. I haven't really agreed on all the praise they've been given in other media earlier, but I'm starting to come around.
On the flipside we got two tracks by Dutch band Sand Creek Massacre. I don't know much about this band but I think they've got this split and another 7" released from before, but I'm not sure. Musically I'd say they're a good match to M:40 even though they're not at all as explosive and aggressive in their approach. If I had to I would probably file this under neo-crust. The music isn't bad and if I'd heard them on a 7" on their own I probably would've given it more chances, but on a split like this it's for me quite obvious that M:40 are the better band and therefore the SCM side will face the slip mat on my turntable for the most part. There are far less interesting bands doing the dark and melodic hardcore style, but also better ones.

People with Discharge shirt drive like shit”.

M:40 have a few releases behind them by now, and on the three tracks on this split they continute to develop their hardcore/crust sound. It's fast and aggressive, but they aren't afraid to lower the tempo and perform some crushing tones and powerful rhythms as well. Faster and slower crustcore in a well executed blend. M:40 convinces more and more for each release.
Sand Creek Massacre are more dark in their approach and falls under the category of "modern crustcore". Not at all as aggressive and explosive as M:40, but still solid stuff.
