Information
Extremely energetic and intense riffing, filled with such nuances and depths it’s freakish. In each twist and turn, breakdown, chorus, verse and whatnot, there’s a riff to catch your attention. The guitar leads are incredible, the oh-so-heavy bass absolutely stomps you into a bloody pulp. And this masterpiece of an album comes presented in ultra-thick, heavy-as-shit, brutal-as-hell sound. The concept album shows a person in distress, angst and agony. This is not by far a feel-good record at it will set you as a listener in a moodswing before you know it. Welcome to the world of euthanasia!

This is a concept album from Swedish crustcore or metalcore band Aktiv Ddshjlp about a young woman committing suicide. 4:48 I apparently the most common time to commit suicide and the record is therefore built around a timetable leading to her death. Lyrics are in Swedish, but the singing is so throated that it could be Albanian to me. Luckily the record comes with lyrics, timetable and explanations of the single songs in English and lyrically the concept holds quite well. The record has 12 tracks in exactly 25 minutes, and that's it. I must admit that I have no deeper knowledge about this genre but musically this record seems very average in any way. If you're a metalhead I guess this is very good for headbanging and killing yourself - so go ahead, I dare you ?

I reviewed this album a while ago when Aktiv Ddshjlp were on the lookout for labels to release it, and now it?s time to review the finished product. I was hesitant to do so, ?cause I wasn?t sure if the album would really live up to my memories of it. I hadn?t listened to it for a long time, and was afraid to ruin the ?illusion? of a bloody wicked record. But dammit, if it doesn?t fulfill all my dreams.
4:48 carries such a major punch with ultra-metallic strings reeking of thrash, black and death, jam-packed with grindcore influences, but never steering too far off the highway of inferno crustcore. I won?t bother divulging further into the theme of the album, ?cause you can read it all in the old review of the promo cd-r. But what I will tell you is that it?s one mean, dark, stark and sinister recording, pure lyrically. I?ll concentrate solely on the music itself, and of course the look of the CD since I didn?t have that at hand earlier.
It?s pretty fastforward for being crustcore, but I guess nothing?s really standard when it comes to Aktiv Ddshjlp. Extremely energetic and intense riffing, filled with such nuances and depths it?s freakish. In each twist and turn, breakdown, chorus, verse and whatnot, there?s a riff to catch your attention. The guitar leads are incredible, the oh-so-heavy bass absolutely stomps you into a bloody pulp. And this masterpiece of an album comes presented in ultra-thick, heavy-as-shit, brutal-as-hell sound. It is really one of the greater and most versatile albums I?ve heard over my years as a reviewer. And I mean versatile in the sense of the sheer width of influences and genres, carefully and skillfully packed into the crust mold. The beautiful package with a clever label print and awesome booklet surely doesn?t disappoint you either. But, there is a downside? The vocals can become a bit monotonous and slightly annoying in the long-run. It?s not that it?s bad, definitely not, but more versatility in that department wouldn?t hurt. However the terrific backups make up for that, although I?d say there?s not enough of it.
This is one mean machine that?s been crafted by Tomas Nilsson.

?Nya?

A spoken intro with some background sounds and electronic noises open up this album of brutal metal music. Here we have elements of thrash metal, hardcore and death metal all combined into the Aktiv Ddshjlp own musical personality. The guitars are fast and have that modern thrash feeling that distinguishes them for example from pure death metal bands. The drumming is intense and fast and at the same time leaves enough space for the guitars and the vocals to develop their ideas. The vocals are really extreme and it is like if someone is torturing this guy before he spits with all hate and anger the lyrics. The rhythm section is tight and interacts really well with the rest of the band. I have to remark the special sound that this recording has, where the guitars and drums are loud and at the same time have sort of an industrial feeling that makes sound machine-like fitting well the spirit of the music.

This was a bit of a dark record to review, because of the fact that it deals with suicide; hence the title 4:48, which is the time when the majority of people commit suicide. The record guides the listener through both single events in one person?s life, to ones happening from early at night at 1:17am, until the clock eventually turns 4:48.
First track is a sampling of the person's self-examination, with some added distortion and echoing tunes; the whole thing sets an amazing and eerie mood. After that the music and Sonny's characteristic vocals breaks in with the first musical track and comes crushing down on you as a dark entity over your body. With haunting guitar melodies and licks, pummelling drums and a crushing sound, the music creates an impact that's hard to forget. If I were to try and pin the music down I'd ask you to try imagining a concrete solid base of crust, add some dark driving metal riffs and you're at least on the right track to begin with.
I think to truly appreciate this record to its full extent, it's important to read along with the music in the lyric sheet. Because, the main part of the strength of the songs lies in the lyrics and to overlook them would be a grave mistake. Beside the lyrics in the inlay, you'll also find explanations to the tracks, which are very helpful and add to the experience of the record.
I actually listened to the whole record without reading the lyrics and found several tracks quite boring and common. But when having the lyrics in front of me and after I had read the explanations, it opened up the music and raised it to a whole new level. - Making it one chilling ride through the night.

Being a reviewer you are bound to receive a CD that you don't have high expectations of at times, but that manages to impress you nevertheless. This is such a CD and I am sure they will make it into my yearlist for 2007. Aktiv Ddshjlp is a Swedish band that mixes punk, black metal and Unbroken-nesque hardcore into a mean and nihilistic musical blend.

The CD-title refers to the time when most people commit suicide. That detail alone just shows how macabre, sinister and brilliant this band sounds. The production of this cd is as raw as the music. If there had been a soundtrack for the suicidal people amongst us they would probably choose to listen to this CD. Great band! That's about all I can say about it. You have to hear this!

You know what's great? Reviewing an album in which the band responsible uses a language you have no familiarity with. These damn Swedes. On the other hand, it does make you really pay attention to the music, focusing on nothing other than the sonic assault. Yeah, I learned that from those hip magazines. Sonic Assault. What faggotry.

Aktiv Ddshjlp, whatever the hell that means (I have the suspicion it has something to do with euthanasia. But what do I know), plays malicious domineering grindcore. It all starts off with a static-filled narration as intro and then it's all mayhem, riot and noise.

At first, one might think that's a bad thing, right? Well, I actually enjoy this. A lot. Although technically grindcore, Aktiv Ddshjlp have a lot of slow-paced moments, and noisy as these fuckers are, all instruments sound distinct to me, and the vocals are a particularly nice surprise; naturally they emulate the sound of pigs screaming, but all in very good taste. What they're screaming about, I have no idea, but hey, they sound really pissed, so I'm good with that.

The production isn't crystal-clear, nor it should be, considering the genre, but like I mentioned before, everything is perceived nicely and no qualms at all on the technical department. The punkish of grind meshes adequately with the death metal assault, so these lads have obviously got things in order. Some black metal influences, straight out of oldies (but goodies) like Darkthrone and Mayhem can also be noticed here, and that, to me, is always welcome.

Extreme Noise Terror, Disrupt, Rotten Sound and the like, if you're into these bands, you should definitely check Aktiv Ddshjlp out. Good stuff. The cover: Some dead person or something like that. Maybe just sleeping. I don't know. I'd rather see Mary Mayhem here, since these guys know her. Fuckers.

7.5 fucking incomprehensible languages out of 10.

AKTIV DDSHJLP?.I found their split EP from 2006 with ?Slakattack? to be rather enjoyable crossover with an attitude of squatting Death Metal boys all over it. I?ve been listening a lot for a while now to their album 4:48 and I must conclude it actually doesn't live up to expectations.

First of all the balance of styles has shifted a bit. The element of hardcore punk and crust only remains in speed therefor the music has become a metalcorish death metal interpretation which is less refreshing and has more of a nineties atmosphere.

Biggest setback however are the vocals. They are very monotone and mediocre screaming. As far as their metal approach goes, their riffs aren?t of such level that they can be considered entertaining the whole way and tend to get pretty dull (that thrashmetal riff in ''Tysta Vittnen' doesn't save the song). It?s not a problem for me personally that most of the songs sound alike but I can image that for the majority of the metal minded listeners, this will only emphasise the monotony. I must say I found the uptempo groovy thrasher 'Utopisk Verklighet' rather enjoyable but the dull harmonic chorus riffs ruin the song.

Due to the monotone vocals the over all sound lacks the aggressive dynamics of old school thrash and the music doesn't come close to the aggression of brutal death metal or the crusty old Extreme Noise Terror intensity. Really, when you mix the styles, dynamics and intensity are key elements and they can not be lacking. Maybe it?s because of the production of the album, but a bad production can never be a valid excuse. The vocals and cymbals dominate the sound. I?d like to hear some live versions of these songs to compare. Good riffs (either catchy, original or just ripping) could have made a difference but as said those are also missing. No, it is really a missed opportunity after their good 2006 EP.

This was a pretty odd idea.. Swedish crust punks AKTIV DDSHJLP are back with a full-lenght album about the time when most people commit suicide, 4:48. The lyrics concentrate on the last hours before a person commit suicide, from 1:17am to 4:48am, including stuff like self-examination, social breakdown, black thoughts of being lonely, shame, guilt, agony and frustration.
Not the most happy or pleasant stuff you can listen to, but what did you expect from a band called ACTIVE EUTHANASIA? But as the lyrics all are in Swedish, people outside Sweden can just enjoy their new heavy sound, which we can thank the new members for.
If we skip the theme of the lyrics and concentrate on the music it's a damned good album, but I personally don't like suicide.

Maybe it's because I've been on a bit of nostalgia trip, but Swedish crust act Aktiv Ddshjlp reminds me a lot of brutal mid-90s metalcore, stuff like Fall Silent, Gehenna (US) or maybe Morning Again. The kind of stuff that's definitely more metal than 'core and heavy on the breakdowns. On the other hand, Aktiv Ddshjlp is probably far more rooted in d-beat and death metal. Despite the verse-chorus-breakdown/no-bullshit arrangements, the record "4:48" is chock-full of dark, ominous leads and fierce tremelo picking, sometimes even breaking into melodeath harmony. Lyrically, I don't think I've heard a more pessimistic record in a long while (until I get the new Shining, I guess). Take the name Aktiv Ddshjlp - active euthanasia. And "4:48", the album's title? That's the time most people commit suicide. Today's song "Tysta vittnen" ("Silent witness")? Actually one of lighter tracks in that it only deals with repression and subordination, not a pointless life lived in pain. Heavy stuff all around.

Hissig selvmordsbrev.

I tematikken, kanskje. I utfrelsen, langt derifra.
